Caroline, or Change

Book and Lyrics by Tony Kushner, Music by Jeanine Tesori

May 4 - June 3, 2007

Playhouse on the Square, 51 S. Cooper St. Memphis, TN

The time is 1963 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Caroline, an African-American laundress for a Southern Jewish family, befriends the young boy of the household while struggling to raise three children of her own. Combining gospel and the sounds of Motown with operatic stylings, this sparkling gem of a musical illuminates the changing times of the Civil Rights era while examining the social and family issues with which our diverse culture still struggles with today. The deeply moving and lyrical story of a maid and her employer's son received critical acclaim and six Tony Award nominations including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
