Crumbs from the Table of Joy

The Circuit Playhouse, 1705 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN
This touching and often humorous story of an African American family is perceived through the eyes of Ernestine, a seventeen year-old girl living under the shroud of grief and displacement. When her recently widowed father uproots his two teenage daughters and moves to Brooklyn in 1950, their pursuit of the American Dream grows complicated by looming issues of race, romance, and religion. An ever increasingly important voice in American theatre, this playwright ably illuminates the gap between black-and-white reality and the colorful world of fantasies and hopes.
