Capital Campaign
Playhouse on the Square, is the only resident professional theatre company in the MidSouth. For thirty-seven years we have been delighting and enlightening audiences and making theatre available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Playhouse conducts an extensive youth and outreach program; an intern program whose graduates have gone on to New York and other theatre towns; and provides "incubator" space for emerging theatre groups and playwrights
Having grown from a small home in a small house to three theatres in Midtown, we are now enlarging our contribution to the performing arts in Memphis. We are building a state-of-the-art theatre and performance space that will allow us to present shows without the technical constraints of our current Playhouse and allow us to enhance the theatrical experience for audience members. The theatre will also be available for use by other performing arts groups in Memphis who need a more intimate presentation space.
Partnering with nationally renowned theatre architect John Morris who designed such theatres as Steppenwolf and LookingGlass in Chicago, Playhouse on the Square is half way through our $15 million capital campaign, “Breaking New Ground”. Sharing in the excitement is award-winning actor Morgan Freeman, one of America’s most respected actors who is leading the effort as the honorary chairman for the campaign.
